Technical note

What we ask of a subcontractor before they come aboard

We ask them for the same things an operator asks of us, before they board one of our vessels.

A crew in a circle on deck reviewing the permit to work

Before anyone boards one of our vessels, we ask them for the same things an operator asks of us.

The job is hired by one company, but the risk is shared by everyone on deck. That is why the list is short and not negotiable:

  1. The company’s legal documents.
  2. Current insurance: type of policy.
  3. Personnel certificates, with their expiry dates.
  4. Full personal protective equipment for everyone who boards.
  5. The on-board safety induction, before starting.
  6. Accepting our stop-work rule: anyone can stop the job if something isn’t right.

If they don’t bring it, they don’t board, even if it costs us a window.

To confirmList to be confirmed with operations and HSE

We don’t do it as a formality. We do it because the safety of an operation depends on everyone on deck, not just our own people.

Why the list reaches the subcontractor

In IOGP’s 2019 safety data, 551 of the 703 lost workday cases involved contractors.

That is why prequalification doesn’t end with the contractor you invite: it continues with whoever boards its vessels.

That list is part of our written safety system, and it is included in full in our file.
