How we prepare a rig move

What decides whether the day of the move goes well happens before. This is how we prepare it, in five steps.

Aegean Maritime team ·

Two tugboats moving a drilling barge on the Lake

A Lake rig doesn’t move by itself. It is moved by a team of vessels and people who have to be ready before the window opens.

When an operator invites us to a rig move, what they see is the day of the operation. What decides whether that day goes well happens before, and this is how we prepare it:

  1. We read the scope with your team

What moves, from where, to where and in what window.

  2. We assign the vessels

And we state in writing which is owned and which is a partner vessel, with its latest inspection.

  3. We assess the risks with the crew

The job risk assessment is done with the crew who will be on deck, not just with the office.

  4. We sign the permit before casting off

And everyone knows who can stop the job: anyone.

  5. We review emergencies and communications

The emergency response plan and the communications between vessels.

None of that shows in the photo of the rig move. But it’s what procurement checks before inviting us, which is why we have it in writing in our file.
